Best Luxury Hotels in Kensington

Published 1 October 2026

Kensington is London at its most elegant: Kensington Gardens and the palace on one side, the great museums of South Kensington on the other, and white stucco terraces in between. This guide picks six of the best places to stay: The Milestone, a five-star boutique hotel facing Kensington Palace; the Royal Garden Hotel, with Min Jiang and park views from the top floor; The Kensington on Queen's Gate; The Gore, an antique-filled Victorian hotel a minute from the Royal Albert Hall; Number Sixteen, a Firmdale townhouse with a private garden; and The Ampersand, a minute from South Kensington station. Harrods and Knightsbridge are a short walk or ride away.

Kensington is London at its most elegant: Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace on one side, the Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Royal Albert Hall on the other, and long white stucco terraces in between. It is quieter than Knightsbridge and greener than Mayfair, and its hotels range from grand five-stars to some of the city's best townhouse hotels. These are the six we would choose. If you are planning around this part of town, our Kensington, South Kensington and Gloucester Road area pages are the natural next step.

The Milestone Hotel

Facing Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace, The Milestone is a five-star boutique hotel in a Victorian building on Kensington Court, run by Red Carnation Hotels. Rooms are individually designed and richly furnished, afternoon tea is a highlight, and the hotel has a small spa and resistance pool. Service is famously personal, and it is one of the most consistently highly rated hotels in London. It holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating, with 43 rooms, 13 suites and six residences. Cheneston's is the restaurant, and the Stables Bar occupies the building's former horse stables.

Royal Garden Hotel

On Kensington High Street, right next to Kensington Gardens, the Royal Garden is a large modern five-star with some of the best park views in the city. Min Jiang, its Chinese restaurant on the top floor, is known for its wood-fired Beijing duck and its views across the gardens towards the palace. The Royal Albert Hall is about ten minutes' walk away. Origin Kensington, which holds two AA Rosettes, serves seasonal British cooking. Piano Kensington, the cocktail bar, has live music in the evenings.

The Kensington

Set in a row of white stucco townhouses on Queen's Gate, The Kensington is part of the Doyle Collection and one of the most polished hotels in South Kensington. Its drawing rooms feel more like a private house than a hotel lobby, and the museums, Harrods and Hyde Park are all within easy walking distance. Open fires and high ceilings set the tone, and the hotel featured in Condé Nast Traveller's Readers' Choice Awards in 2025. Town House is the restaurant, and the K Bar is a clubby spot for a drink before or after a concert.

The Gore

Established in 1892, The Gore is a charming Victorian hotel a minute's walk from the Royal Albert Hall, now part of Starhotels Collezione. Its fifty rooms are packed with antiques, paintings and period character, which makes it a favourite for concert-goers and anyone who prefers history to minimalism. The Rolling Stones held a launch party for their 1968 album here, and photographs from the night still hang in Bar 190. 190 Queen's Gate is the restaurant, and one suite is dedicated to Wizard of Oz memorabilia.

Number Sixteen

Part of Firmdale Hotels, Number Sixteen occupies a row of townhouses on Sumner Place, a few minutes from South Kensington station. The interiors are by Kit Kemp, bright, witty and full of colour, and the private garden at the back is one of the loveliest hotel gardens in London on a summer evening. There are 41 bedrooms behind the white stucco façade. The light-filled Orangery, the Drawing Room and the Library make it feel more like a stylish private house than a hotel.

The Ampersand Hotel

A minute's walk from South Kensington station, The Ampersand is a stylish hotel in a large Victorian building, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. It has its own Mediterranean restaurant, and its location makes it ideal for the museums, the boutiques of Brompton Cross and an easy run into Knightsbridge. The 1888 building has 111 rooms and suites, each themed on one of botany, music, geometry, ornithology or astronomy in a nod to the museums next door. Apero, the restaurant, sits beneath the original Victorian cellar arches, and The Drawing Rooms are a calm spot for afternoon tea.
