Things To Do in South Kensington

Published 21 October 2026

South Kensington is better known for its museums than its nightlife, and that is its charm: elegant streets, grown-up restaurants and evenings built around concerts, museum lates and long dinners. This guide covers the best things to do in South Kensington for adults: Polish food at Ognisko in the old Polish Hearth Club, Bombay Brasserie, Daphne's and Zuma; Art Deco cocktails at the K Bar and Bar 190; the V&A's free Friday Lates and late-night jazz at the Royal Albert Hall; lingerie at Rigby & Peller and Coco de Mer; and shopping at Brompton Cross, Harrods and Sloane Street.
LG Things To Do in London

South Kensington is better known for its museums than its nightlife, but that is exactly its appeal. The streets around Exhibition Road and Queen's Gate are elegant and calm, the restaurants are grown-up rather than noisy, and the evenings revolve around concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, late openings at the V&A and long dinners. Knightsbridge and Chelsea are a short walk away when you want more. This is our guide to the best things to do in South Kensington for an adult evening. For where to stay, see our guide to the best luxury hotels in South Kensington.

Restaurants

Ognisko on Exhibition Road occupies the grand townhouse where the Polish Hearth Club was founded in 1940, and its dining room and terrace serve traditional Polish and Eastern European food in one of the most handsome rooms in the area. Opposite Gloucester Road station, Bombay Brasserie has served Indian food in its conservatory dining room since 1982, bringing Mumbai flavours with a modern twist; the dress code is smart casual. At Brompton Cross, Daphne's on Draycott Avenue is a polished, long-running Italian named after its founder, Daphne Rye, and now part of the group behind The Ivy and J Sheekey. On the Knightsbridge edge of the area, Zuma on Raphael Street, founded by the chef Rainer Becker and inspired by the izakayas of Tokyo, serves modern Japanese food from a robata grill alongside more than 40 sakes, and its chef's table seats just a handful of guests. Bibendum, long the area's most famous restaurant, closed in 2025, but Michelin House itself, designed by François Espinasse and opened in 1911, is still worth a look for its tiled façade, with the Petals florist in the old entrance hall.

Bars

South Kensington's best bars are in its hotels. The K Bar at The Kensington on Queen's Gate is an Art Deco room of leather wingback chairs and deep blue velvet, serving classic and Champagne cocktails. Further up Queen's Gate, Bar 190 at The Gore is a wood-panelled Victorian bar where the Rolling Stones once launched an album. The Polo Lounge at The Adria and the Malachite cocktail lounge at The Bentley, both covered in our hotel guide, are quieter alternatives.

Evenings out

On the last Friday of most months, the V&A stays open until 10pm for its Friday Late, with DJs, live performance, film and installations across the galleries, and entry is free. The Royal Albert Hall has a full programme of concerts and, in its intimate Elgar Room, a Late Night Jazz series alongside cabaret and comedy. South Kensington does not really have nightclubs of its own; for those, head east to Mayfair, covered in our guide to things to do in Mayfair, or into the West End.

Lingerie

Two of London's best lingerie boutiques are a short walk away. Rigby & Peller on Hans Road, beside Harrods, is known for its expert fittings, and Coco de Mer, the luxury erotic boutique, opened its permanent store on Motcomb Street in Belgravia in 2024. Agent Provocateur also has a concession inside Harrods.

High-end shopping

Brompton Cross, where Brompton Road meets Fulham Road, is one of London's most stylish shopping corners, with boutiques such as Joseph. A few minutes east, Harrods on the Brompton Road needs no introduction, and Sloane Street is lined with designer flagships. The Conran Shop, which once filled Michelin House, now has a dazzling flagship on Sloane Square.

A perfect evening in South Kensington

Start with a cocktail in the K Bar or the Polo Lounge at The Adria, then walk up Exhibition Road to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert or a set in the Elgar Room. Afterwards, book a late table at Zuma or Ognisko, and finish with a nightcap at Bar 190 or back at your hotel. On the last Friday of the month, swap the concert for the V&A's Friday Late and wander the galleries after dark. If you want to dance afterwards, Mayfair's clubs are a ten-minute taxi ride away.
